Message from Interim Chancellor Mitch Bailey

Mitch Bailey

I am honored by the opportunity the Board of Trustees has given me to serve our students, our college and our broader San Francisco community. Though I never expected to be serving in this position 鈥 as I have never aspired to be a college CEO 鈥 I am excited about the opportunity to work with each of you as we tackle some big issues over the next year.

I want to thank Chancellor David Martin for his grace, kindness and support during this transition period and for his dedication to serving and supporting City College鈥檚 students and our community college system.

Over the last few weeks, I have visited our five centers, explored the Ocean campus, chatted with the leadership of our stakeholder groups, and met with several students, faculty, staff, community leaders and supporters.  I remain impressed by the passion each person demonstrated for the future and well-being of City College.  This energy is vital to our ability to collectively examine and resolve issues relating to accreditation, short- and long-term fiscal health, enrollment growth and leadership stability.

The opportunity that currently presents itself is channeling these energies and passions to focus us all in the same direction. In our work, we must always ask one non-negotiable question: 鈥How will this benefit students?

I am confident that by approaching our discussions from the same place and asking this one simple but foundational question, we can have authentic conversations and find common ground.

Next year, City College celebrates its 90th anniversary.  These nine decades hold a rich history filled with countless points of pride and achievement, and candidly, it is also a history scattered with missed opportunities.

There is no doubt we should proudly acknowledge our past and applaud those accomplishments worthy of celebration, recognize and accept what we could have done better, learn lessons from where we fell short and remain firmly grounded in our mission and values.  What is most important as we prepare for this academic year and the many that will follow is that together, we focus on CITY FORWARD: looking ahead rather than behind.

I encourage us all to harness our capacity to accept the past but not be ruled by it, to recognize our environment but not be constrained by it, and to embrace our ability and not be frightened by it.

Much work is being done across the college as we transition to the new academic and fiscal year.  I look forward to working with all of you as we embark on this journey together, even with the inevitable bumps we will experience along the way. At the end of the day, thousands of current and future students are counting on us to provide world-class teaching and learning experiences that will create opportunities for them to provide for themselves and their families. They have placed their trust in us, and we owe them everything we have to be worthy of their confidence.

Many thanks!

Mitch
